I can confirm that the patch worked:
$ ./backtick -E z ' echo' ' hi' ''
backtick: fatal: the command line after the block must not be empty
$ ./backtick -E A_LONGISH_NAME ' s6-echo' ' foo' '' echo '$A_LONGISH_NAME$A_LONGISH_NAME'
foofoo
$ ./backtick -E z ' echo' ' hi' '' echo '$z$z'
hihi
o/
